Songs rule people’s lives. People are just waiting for a voice, someone to say something. There’s so much depth in The Smiths’ music that when people say to me, ‘You sang that song and I cried.’ I’m not surprised. I understand completely, it’s happened to me. I’ve purchased records that are Biblical; you think, ‘This person understands me, nobody else does.’ It’s like having an immovable friend.
